Sun — essence and what was added to it
Sun: atma — soul / self.
Essence: atma — soul / self. Stated at bphs-santhanam 3.12-13.
The three registers
One root, read at three levels. These are our derivations, not printed anywhere: each one has to follow from the root word above, and a reading that cannot be traced back to it is the fluff this method exists to remove.
Material. Position, authorship, and being seen. Work that carries your name; standing that does not depend on anyone vouching for you. Where the Sun is weak the material question is not income but CREDIT — the work happens and someone else is thanked for it.
Mental. Self-concept and the confidence to occupy a role. Not self-esteem in the therapeutic sense: the felt right to speak as yourself, in your own name, without borrowing an authority.
Spiritual. The atman as the fixed point everything else is measured from. The Sun is the one graha whose spiritual reading is not a metaphor - the verse says SOUL, and every other meaning is a consequence of that.
What genuinely derives from it
identity, vitality, self-authorship, being seen, father, spine, eye, sovereignty
What was appended — and is not carried here
These do not follow from the essence. Where they encode a social rank or a rule about who a person may be, we do not use them.
- ‘royal planet’ as social rank (BPHS 3.21)
How to use this
A claim that follows from the essence is carried. A claim that does not was appended, whenever it was written — and almost all of it turns out to concern caste, gender role or marriage eligibility.
