Jupiter — essence and what was added to it
Jupiter: jnana-sukha — knowledge and happiness.
Essence: jnana-sukha — knowledge and happiness. Stated at bphs-santhanam 3.12-13.
The three registers
One root, read at three levels. These are our derivations, not printed anywhere: each one has to follow from the root word above, and a reading that cannot be traced back to it is the fluff this method exists to remove.
Material. Wealth through counsel, teaching, law, advisory and institutional position - and children. Material Jupiter arrives as OPPORTUNITY OPENED BY A PERSON, rarely as a transaction.
Mental. Meaning-making and judgement. The faculty that decides what a situation is FOR. Where Jupiter is strong the mind reaches for significance; where weak, events stay a sequence of things that happened.
Spiritual. Dharma and the guru function. jnana-sukha pairs knowledge WITH happiness, which is the load-bearing part: the verse does not treat wisdom as austerity. Knowing rightly is supposed to feel like relief.
What genuinely derives from it
meaning, counsel, teacher, expansion, dharma, children, faith, generosity
What was appended — and is not carried here
These do not follow from the essence. Where they encode a social rank or a rule about who a person may be, we do not use them.
- ‘Jupiter and Venus are Brahmins’ (BPHS 3.21)
How to use this
A claim that follows from the essence is carried. A claim that does not was appended, whenever it was written — and almost all of it turns out to concern caste, gender role or marriage eligibility.
