Rahu — essence and what was added to it
Rahu: ahamkara — ego.
Essence: ahamkara — ego. Stated at saravali-kalyanavarma 4.1-2.
On this root. NOT from BPHS, which names Rahu at 3.10 and then omits it from the governance verse at 3.12-13. Saravali prints a PARALLEL essence verse - “The Sun is the soul of the Zodiac personified, the Moon mind, Mars strength, Mercury speech (voice), Jupiter intelligence, Venus comforts, Rahu ego and Saturn grief” - which includes Rahu and still omits Ketu. The two witnesses also DISAGREE on two of the seven they share: BPHS gives Jupiter jnana-sukha (knowledge and happiness) where Saravali gives intelligence, and BPHS gives Venus shukra (potency/desire) where Saravali gives comforts. The essence verse is not one fixed text.
The three registers
One root, read at three levels. These are our derivations, not printed anywhere: each one has to follow from the root word above, and a reading that cannot be traced back to it is the fluff this method exists to remove.
Material. Foreign, unconventional, technological and mediated gain - anything whose value comes from novelty or distance. Amplification without limit, which is why the material register is where Rahu does the most damage.
Mental. Ahamkara: the ego-function - what you need to be SEEN as. Restlessness, obsession, and the hunger for a self-image. Rahu’s mental register is not appetite but IDENTITY-SHAPED appetite.
Spiritual. The blocked or hijacked path: spiritual ambition, guru-collecting, and the use of practice as status. Read charitably, Rahu is the force that makes a person want to be more than they are - which is a beginning as often as a trap.

What was appended — and is not carried here
These do not follow from the essence. Where they encode a social rank or a rule about who a person may be, we do not use them.

How to use this
A claim that follows from the essence is carried. A claim that does not was appended, whenever it was written — and almost all of it turns out to concern caste, gender role or marriage eligibility.
