Saturn — essence and what was added to it
Saturn: duhkha — sorrow / constraint.
Essence: duhkha — sorrow / constraint. Stated at bphs-santhanam 3.12-13.
The three registers
One root, read at three levels. These are our derivations, not printed anywhere: each one has to follow from the root word above, and a reading that cannot be traced back to it is the fluff this method exists to remove.
Material. Labour, duration, debt, obligation, old assets, and everything that compounds. Saturn’s material register is the only one where SLOWNESS IS THE MECHANISM rather than an obstacle to it.
Mental. Endurance, fear, isolation, and the honest assessment of limits. duhkha is the printed word: sorrow. Saturn does not cause misfortune so much as remove the anaesthetic.
Spiritual. Vairagya - dispassion earned rather than performed. Time as the teacher, consequence as the curriculum. Saturn is the graha whose spiritual reading is indistinguishable from its material one, and that is the point.
What genuinely derives from it
time, duration, limitation, labour, endurance, consequence, age, the poor, structure, service
What was appended — and is not carried here
These do not follow from the essence. Where they encode a social rank or a rule about who a person may be, we do not use them.
- ‘Saturn rules the Sudras’ (BPHS 3.21)
How to use this
A claim that follows from the essence is carried. A claim that does not was appended, whenever it was written — and almost all of it turns out to concern caste, gender role or marriage eligibility.
