Edition consulted: Sagar Publications, New Delhi. Title page states “First Published 1994”; translator’s preface dated January 14, 1994. Scan is a later (2004) printing. OCR title page reads “BOOK II” but the preface and the printed sloka range 1998-5774 both give Book III. .
What kind of text this is
Compiled work with two named authors and a printed sloka census: 3407 slokas by Achyuta, 5774 by Venkatesa, 9181 in all across three volumes. WE HOLD BOOK III ONLY (slokas 1998-5774); the derivation of the nadiamsa is deferred by the translator to the Book I preface, which we do not have. The translator states two editorial interventions in his own preface: he SEPARATED general-principle slokas from nadiamsa slokas in the translation, and he LICENSES the reader to extend any nadiamsa rule four-fold across signs of the same modality - coverage the text does not contain. Fourth Santhanam entry in the corpus; not an independent voice.
What it contributed
nadiamsa-lookup — novel. Horoscopy as a lookup table: 150 named cells per sign, 1800 in all, ordering printed at 5729-5730 (movable in order, fixed reversed, dual from the 76th).
The only fully deterministic reading system in the corpus - one birth time selects exactly one printed statement, with no interpretive latitude and therefore no post-hoc rescue. That makes it the cleanest falsifiability specimen we have, and the reason its failure mode is so instructive.
precision-precondition-unsatisfiable — novel. The text states its own validity condition (5730-5731) and the condition cannot be met: a nadiamsa is 34-56 seconds of birth time at 28.5N.
A system that voids itself by its own stated standard, measured rather than argued. Strongest available answer to ‘why not just use a finer division’ - finer divisions do not fail because they are wrong, they fail because the input data does not exist.
licensed-extrapolation — novel. Translator concedes ~5% coverage of the 1800 cells, then licenses a four-fold extension by modality - manufacturing rules the text never contained.
Tenth mechanism for the false-claim table, and the first found in a translator’s preface rather than in the text. Openly stated, in his own name, with no deception at any step - which is exactly why a later citation of ‘Deva Keralam’ can be honest and still be false.
remedy-pays-the-diagnostician — novel. Gold and silver images donated TO AN ASTROLOGER as the prescribed remedy, in four separate places in Book III.
First named astrologer-payee in the corpus, checked against Brihat Samhita (dakshina to priests) and Prasna Marga (gifts to the astrologer read as omens, not prescribed). Fixes the remedy-market question: the transaction is a position some texts take, not the corpus default.
caste-graded-remedy-access — refinement. Caste-graded and caste-mediated ritual access (‘A Soodra should listen to this account through a Brahmin’); Brahmin 129, caste 13, Soodra 1 in 192,120 words.
Completes the K. N. Rao negative result. Caste is absent from the technical apparatus and load-bearing in the remedial layer - an operational definition of ‘appended’ with both halves measured, rather than asserted.
translator-dependence — restatement. Translator states he SEPARATED general-principle slokas from nadiamsa slokas in the English text.
Third independent statement that the standard English editions are interpretive, after Bhavartha Ratnakara and Hora Sara - and this one from our own calculation authority’s translator.
