How accurate does your birth time need to be?
Different techniques demand wildly different precision. Some survive an hour of error; one system needs your birth time to the second — and says so itself. A ladder, measured.
“I only know I was born in the morning.” It is the most common thing people say when they order a birth chart reading, and the honest answer is: it depends entirely on which techniques the reading uses. Some survive an hour of error. One needs your birth time to the second — and says so itself.
- Planetary signs± hoursExcept the Moon, planets stay in the same sign for days or weeks. A wrong hour changes nothing here — which is why sign-based readings are so robust and so vague.
- Moon’s nakshatra± 1–2 hoursThe Moon moves about one nakshatra a day. An hour of error rarely moves it; four hours sometimes will. Your Vimshottari dasha start depends on this.
- Ascendant sign± 30–60 minA new sign rises roughly every two hours, so most errors are survivable — but a birth near a boundary flips the entire house structure.
- House cusps, divisional charts± 5–15 minThe navamsa changes every 13–15 minutes of arc. This is where “rounded to the nearest quarter hour” starts costing you real detail.
- KP sub-sub-lord± 1–3 minKrishnamurti’s six levels of subdivision push resolution down to minutes. Defensible only if your recorded time is genuinely accurate to the minute.
- Nadiamsa34–56 secondsOne 1/150th of a sign. Measured against the Swiss Ephemeris at 28.5°N: between 33.6 and 56.3 seconds of birth time per cell. No birth record on earth supplies this.
The system that voids itself
The bottom rung is worth spelling out, because it is the clearest case in the whole corpus of a technique failing on its own terms rather than on ours.
Deva Keralam, a nadi text, divides each sign into 150 named cells — 1,800 across the zodiac — and the reading for you is the printed entry for the cell rising at your birth. Then it states its own precondition:

So: no exact cell, no valid reading. We measured the cell. It is 0.2° of the rising degree. Sampling ascendant motion every ten seconds across a full day at 28.5°N with the Swiss Ephemeris, one cell lasts between 33.6 and 56.3 seconds of birth time.
By the text’s own stated standard, essentially every reading ever produced from a recorded birth time is void. Hospital times are rounded, often to five or fifteen minutes, and written down after the event. This is not a sceptic’s objection imported from outside — it is the system’s own condition, measured.
What to do if your time is uncertain
- Say so, and get told what changes. A reading that absorbs an unknown birth time without comment is not using anything that depends on it — which means it is quietly giving you the top of the ladder while charging for the bottom.
- Prefer techniques that degrade gracefully. Planet-relative methods stay stable when the ascendant moves; house-cusp methods do not. One nadi tradition says this outright — that the ascendant is kept mainly to settle which sign a fast-moving planet occupied, not as the frame for interpretation.
- Treat rectification claims with care. Adjusting the birth time until the chart matches known events is legitimate as a stated, documented step. It is not legitimate when it is done silently, because then the chart has been fitted to the life and can no longer be evidence about it.
How we handle it
Our files state the ayanamsa, compute every position from the Swiss Ephemeris, and are deterministic — the same chart produces the same file byte for byte. Where a claim depends on a birth time you are not sure of, the file says so rather than quietly asserting it.
