How Vedic astrology branched: a map of the systems
Parashari, Jaimini, Tajika, KP, Lal Kitab and Nadi are not one tradition. They are separate branches with separate dates and separate parents — here is the map, with what each one actually contributed.
People say “Vedic astrology” as though it names one thing. It names at least six, with different parents, different dates and, in two cases, mutually incompatible assumptions about whether your life is fixed. Knowing which branch a reading comes from tells you more than knowing the reader’s credentials.

The mainstream: Shadbala, the sixteen divisional charts, arudhas, the karma frame. The same work circulates in 25-, 36- and 97-chapter versions, which is a fact about the text, not a quibble.

The join everyone skips
The calendar layer is genuinely old and genuinely Indian. The horoscope layer arrives in the second century AD from a Greek source, and the text that brings it says so. These are two different objects that later got told as one continuous story — which is how “the calendar is 3,000 years old” becomes “your birth chart reading is 5,000 years old”.

The branches disagree about free will, and nobody mentions it
This is the part that should change how you read any prediction. The classical Parashari stream is full of cancellation clauses, remedial measures and conditional rules — it assumes the outcome can be altered, which is why it bothers prescribing anything at all. One influential modern system has no cancellation apparatus at all and states that results are “predetermined at the very birth itself”.
So when a reading tells you something is fixed, that is a statement about which branch it came from, not about your life.We work from the frame the classical texts actually use: the chart describes conditions and tendencies, and what you do inside them is not written down anywhere.
What each branch is genuinely good at
- Parashari — strength measurement and structure. If you want to know what a placement can actually support, this is the machinery.
- Jaimini — the soul-level reading: what you are here to do rather than what you will get.
- Tajika — the year ahead as its own chart. Genuinely useful, and honest about being a second import if you read the vocabulary.
- KP — precision, at the cost of needing a birth time you can defend to the minute. See how accurate does your birth time need to be?
- Lal Kitab — a remedy system with real internal logic, routinely mis-sold as ancient.
Which one we use, and why we say so
Our files are Parashari at the base — Swiss Ephemeris positions, Shadbala, divisional charts, Vimshottari timing — with the branch and the settings named in the file itself.
