The best time to go abroad, and how that window is computed

The short answer: the periods that favour a move are computable, because period boundaries are arithmetic derived from the Moon’s position at birth. What you get is a set of dated windows — months in which the relevant houses are activated — not a departure date. The arithmetic is exact; the conclusion drawn from it is a judgement.

How the window is computed

Four steps, and none of them involves intuition:

1. 1Fix the Moon, to the degree

   The period sequence starts from the Moon’s exact longitude at birth. This is why birth time matters here more than anywhere else: a few minutes of error moves every boundary that follows.

2. 2Derive the period sequence

   Each planet governs a period of fixed length, in a fixed order, sub-divided the same way. The result is a nested calendar covering the whole life, with start and end timestamps rather than approximate years.

3. 3Find which periods activate the relevant houses

   For a move: the planets governing the twelfth and fourth houses, the ninth or tenth where the move is for study or work, and Rahu where it is prominent. The windows are the stretches when those planets run the clock.

4. 4Check the transits over those windows

   Slow-planet positions across the window either support the indication or argue with it. This is the step that narrows a two-year period into a few workable months.

The whole calculation. Given an accurate birth time, two practitioners using the same ayanamsa will produce the same dates.

What the output honestly looks like

A completed reading of this question does not say “go in March”. It says something closer to: the sub-period governing your twelfth house runs from this date to this date; within it, the stretch from here to here has transit support; the band after it is unsupported and better used for preparation than for applications.

That is a planning instrument. It tells you which quarter to aim an application at, when to have documents ready, and which months are better spent building the case than submitting it.

Where the calculation goes wrong

• Birth time. Everything downstream inherits its error. If your time came from memory rather than a record, the windows should be read as ranges — and a reading that hides that from you is hiding the most important caveat it has. We wrote abouthow much precision actually matters separately.
• Ayanamsa. Different schools apply a different correction between the tropical and sidereal zodiac. Two tools can disagree by enough to move a planet into the next house and therefore change which window you are told about. Ask which one was used;here is why it matters.
• Period splitting. Sub-period boundaries are frequently computed by dividing days proportionally, which is not what the system actually specifies. The error is small at the top level and grows as you go deeper — enough to move a boundary by days at the level people plan on.
• Reading one layer only. A period that supports the move while the transits argue against it is a different answer from one where both agree, and only checking one of them produces confident nonsense.

Using the windows to plan, concretely

1. Mark the supported stretch in a calendar you actually look at.
2. Work backwards: documents, funds, tests and employer conversations need to be finished before it opens, not during it.
3. Put the irreversible steps — resignation, deposits, one-way bookings — inside it rather than either side of it.
4. Use the unsupported months for the unglamorous half: qualifications, savings, and the paperwork nobody wants to do twice.
