A Manual of Hindu Astrology

A Manual of Hindu Astrology — what it is, what it added, and what we retired from it.

A Manual of Hindu Astrology — B. V. Raman.

Edition consulted: 1935 edition. Dedicated to his grandfather Bangalore Suryanarain Rao. Carries an introduction by Dr. V. V. Ramana Sastri and the author’s own introduction. The preface states it is the companion to his predictive book of the previous year: “Last year I wrote a comprehensive book entitled ‘A Text Book of Hindu Astrology’… But later on, I realised the need for a book devoted to the mathematical side of the subject too.” .

What kind of text this is

Complete and clean. Purely computational - ayanamsa, oblique ascensions, planetary and house longitudes, the sixteen vargas - with no predictive content, which makes it the book in this corpus closest to what our own engine does. SEVENTH B. V. Raman source: adds claims, adds no independent voice. The companion volume it names (A Text Book of Hindu Astrology, 1934) is NOT in the corpus, and it is the volume that would settle whether his transmission stance hardened.

What it contributed

ayanamsa-acknowledged-then-bracketednovel. Sections 45-49: the ayanamsa ‘varies from 19 to 23 degrees’, five candidate epochs are listed, ‘no definite proof is available in favour of any one’, the question is called ‘a most vital question’, the discussion is declined as ‘outside our limits’ - and AD 397 is then adopted in the next section without argument.

An eleventh mechanism, and the politest: acknowledged then bracketed. The difficulty is stated accurately and granted full weight, then deferred, then a value is used as though deferral had settled it. It is also the best citation in the corpus for why a reading must name its ayanamsa - from the man whose name is on one of the competing values.

practitioner-competence-critiquenovel. 1935: the average astrologer’s ‘pretensions to make correct predictions are really baseless’, and by the ancients’ own stated qualifications ‘none of us to-day would be deemed to be called an astrologer at all’.

The same author later published 122,126 words of never-missing retrospective readings. The critique came first, from inside, in print - which makes the failure-condition problem in Notable Horoscopes a lapse against his own earlier standard rather than an outsider’s charge.

authority-from-geniusnovel. ‘A Varahamihira or a Kalidasa… could not have been so ignortant or indifferent as to give room for such fallacies’ - the author’s stature offered as evidence the text contains no error.

Distinct from esoteric warrant: that shields a METHOD from checking, this shields an AUTHOR. Any error found becomes evidence the finder misread. The same sentence also repeats the attrition case, calling Uttara Kalamrita’s author ‘Kalidasa’.

precision-vs-contradiction-equivocationnovel. Classical disagreement excused by modern disagreement - three published latitudes for Bangalore differing by three arc-minutes offered against texts asserting incompatible doctrines.

Equates measurement precision with contradiction. Worth naming because it is the standard reply to any inconsistency finding, and because it appears in a book otherwise devoted to careful arithmetic.

ganita-hora-splitrestatement. An explicit three-way division: astronomy, mathematical astrology (chart casting and strengths), and prediction - with this book covering only the middle layer.

A 1935 practitioner drawing the line where Varahamihira and Bhaskara drew it, and where our own product draws it: the computed layer is checkable, the interpretive layer is where claims must be bounded.

We quote and cite; we do not republish. Most translations in this corpus are in copyright, and the public-domain ones are better served by the Internet Archive than by a copy here. Citations give chapter and verse so any claim can be checked against your own edition.
