What kind of text this is

A modern EDITED VOLUME, not a single-authored work. Rao wrote only the Introduction and editorial footnotes; the other 17 papers are separately bylined and vary widely in method. Attributing any chapter to Rao is an error - this caused a misattribution in our own spine note. Loci must name the contributor.

What it contributed

sex-differentiated-reading — contradiction. Kusum Vashishtha (p.93): ‘we must not stress her sex, but instead, treat it as the horoscope of a male for all predictions’, because the husband-transfer rule ‘was generally true till forty or fifty years ago’.

The tradition retiring its own stri-jataka layer inside a traditionalist institution’s textbook. Corrects our attribution: a woman on the ICAS faculty, published under Rao’s editorship and named approvingly in his Introduction - an institutional position.

predestined-economic-station — contradiction. Three further contributors record the same expiry: ‘hereditary occupations have mostly vanished’ (R. C. Sharma p.50); ‘Hereditary professions have vanished and are vanishing’ (Kedar p.15); ‘woman had no choice except to reconcile herself to her fate’ (Nigam p.141).

Four contributors, four techniques, one observation - the category-2 test run from inside, unprompted, four times in one book.

field-tests-real — novel. A pass mark set before the result (‘minimum accuracy… sixty six, preferably eighty percent’), an explicit control group with its rationale, per-rule scores including 0%, 10%, 16%, and test charts cited to page and issue.

The only two-group contrast design and the only stated numeric threshold in the corpus, and the only source making its test data locatable by a third party.

disconfirmation-absorption — refinement. Kapoor p.38: five disconfirming cases reduced to one - two by persuading the subjects, two by adding a retrograde adjustment after seeing the result - then ‘Thus blind test was applied at random’, yielding a claimed 97%.

The clearest printed specimen of post-hoc rescue in the corpus, sitting in the volume’s best-designed chapter. The gap to a scoreable practice is a discipline gap, not a capability gap.

anecdote-without-base-rate — refinement. Every headline percentage is computed inside a sample selected on the outcome, so none has a denominator. Rao meanwhile rules Gauquelin out as ‘not a valid piece of astrological research’.

First source that builds the machinery to escape the concept and then declines to use it. A failure condition exists, fires, and is overridden.

kaala-sarpa-post-classical — novel. Z. Ansari p.180: ‘In the classical astrological literature available to us there is no mention of Kaal Sarpa Yoga’, and it is ‘a matter of fright for those as are told by astrologers’ - then codifies it anyway over forty pages.

A practitioner dating one of India’s most commercially exploited yogas as post-classical and naming its fear market, unprompted.

no-remedy-doctrine — restatement. Zero substantive hits for remedy/upaya/gem/mantra/puja/yagya/charity in 55,113 words. ‘Astrology… is a purely predictive science only’ (Rao, Introduction).

The most influential Indian teaching institution of the 1990s published a 240-page textbook with no remedy sales surface at all.

caste-added-at-translation — restatement. Zero hits for caste/varna/brahmin/sudra/kshatriya/vaishya/outcaste in 55,113 words. The BPHS ch.3 planetary-varna scheme is simply not carried forward.

Corroborates the Yavanajataka dating from the other direction: the full Parashari and Jaimini apparatus can be taught with the caste layer entirely removed and lose nothing technical. That is what ‘appended, not structural’ looks like when tested rather than asserted.

greek-transmission — contradiction. Vashistha pp.12-13 credits Aristarchus with heliocentrism and Hipparchus with precession, accurately. No transmission-denial passage anywhere in the book.

A rival, equally nationalist school does not ridicule the Greeks - so denial-by-ridicule is Raman’s move, not the tradition’s default.

endogamy-rules — novel. Nigam p.147: horoscope matching is ‘obviously evolved out of centuries of observation on thousands of horoscopes’ and ‘Many attacks on traditional method of tallying of horoscopes are not justified as they give correct results.’

Answers an open question in _What Holds. Matching is defended from inside by appeal to an uncounted ancestral corpus - by an author who demonstrably knows how to count, in the same chapter where counting produced a 0% and a 16%.

What we do not carry from it

• Kusum Vashishtha, ‘Successful Indian Women in Different Fields’, p.92 — Retired by the volume itself, and by us. A rule whose accuracy is indexed to female literacy (0.5% -> 40%, 1901 -> 1991 census, the author’s own figures) was reading the household, not the sky. ATTRIBUTION CORRECTION: this passage is by KUSUM VASHISHTHA (nee Kusum Sharma), a woman astrologer on the ICAS teaching faculty - not by K. N. Rao. Rao is the volume’s editor and names her research approvingly in his Introduction (p.5), which makes the concession an institutional position rather than one man’s aside.
• Kusum Vashishtha, pp.97-100 (Hazarika, Lata Mangeshkar) — Malefic-strength-as-masculinity is a social category smuggled back in under a technical name. Deleted per _Method section 3; the underlying observation (strong malefics support competitive public careers regardless of sex) is kept without the gendering.
• Kusum Vashishtha, pp.91, 93 — The historical claim (a Vedic golden age of women’s equality that the present is ‘harking back to’) is Altekar’s contested 1930s thesis, not evidence, and it is doing rhetorical work: it makes a correction to the tradition look like fidelity to it. Second documented instance of a novelty framed as restoration in this corpus (after Krishnamurti Paddhati). Keep the correction; drop the warrant.
• S. N. Kapoor, ‘Service or Self-employment?’, p.38 — The clearest printed specimen of post-hoc rescue in this corpus, and it sits in the volume’s single best-designed chapter - which is what makes it worth keeping in the register rather than in the bin. A rule whose exceptions are absorbed by a modification introduced after the exception appeared has no failure condition; calling that a “blind test” while the subjects self-report their own employment status in front of the lecturer compounds it. The 97% is withdrawn as evidence; the 9/10-and-8/10 controlled result (atap-two-group-contrast) is not.
• K. N. Rao, Introduction, pp.5, 8 — The introduction’s accuracy claim is contradicted by the volume it introduces. “Replicated a thousand times” describes no performed replication; the phrase “it is reasonable to assert” is the whole of the evidence offered. Retired as a claim; the underlying papers are assessed on their own printed numbers instead.
• R. K. Wishwakarma, p.117 and closing; Shunny Nigam, p.146 — The measurement is made and then not allowed to bite. This is the exact half-step that separates this volume from research: the threshold exists, the score exists, and the score falling below the threshold changes nothing. Recorded because it is the failure mode our own rule table is most likely to repeat.
• K. N. Rao, Introduction, p.3 — The criterion of validity is inverted: usefulness to the practitioner is made the test of whether a statistical finding counts as research. Under that criterion no disconfirming statistic can ever be relevant, which is precisely why a school with stated pass marks still ends up outside the reach of evidence. Retired as a standard; noted as the reason the volume’s own apparatus does not travel.
• M. N. Kedar, ‘Education for a Career and the Tension of Parents’, p.15 and editorial footnote — Factually wrong where it is checkable. [ours] Cognitive-ability and aptitude testing is one of the better-validated areas of applied psychology, with published predictive validities for training and job performance; “nowhere succeeded … with any amount of success” is not a defensible statement in 1994 or now. And the counselling claim is unaudited: hundreds of children counselled, zero outcomes recorded. Retired outright.
• Y. K. Bansal, ‘Jaimini Astrology and General Elections in India’, p.160 — Manufactured antiquity in its plainest form. Contradicted by the corpus’s own earliest datable horoscopic text (Yavanajataka, AD 149/150-269/270), which credits the Greeks.
• R. N. Vashistha, ‘Evolution of Cosmology’, closing paragraph, pp.14-15 — A prediction that all future physics will vindicate a prior tradition is unfalsifiable in principle: any result can be read as the convergence. Recorded as a variant of the documented priority-inversion mechanism - priority claimed in advance on future results rather than retro-fitted onto past ones.
• Shunny Nigam, ‘Marital Disharmony’, section ‘Justification for Statistical Method’, p.147 — Answers a question the project had left open: how the matching instrument is defended from inside. The defence is an appeal to an uncounted ancestral corpus, offered by an author who demonstrably knows how to count, in the same chapter where counting produced two failures. Matching remains category 2 - a community-endogamy gatekeeping instrument - and this passage is now the citation for the fact that its own practitioners do not test it. The four scored marital-tension rules from the same chapter are assessed separately.
• K. N. Rao, Introduction, pp.7-8 — Second source running with the same escape hatch (after Krishnamurti Paddhati). If a wrong prediction is always the reader’s deficiency, the rule set is unfalsifiable regardless of how carefully individual rules are scored - and this volume scores rules carefully, which shows the two can coexist in one book.
