Vedic and Western astrology: where they actually differ
Same planets, same instant, same astronomy — they agree to the arcsecond. The computational disagreement is one subtraction of about 24°. Everything else is interpretive machinery, and the timing systems share no mechanism at all.
They use the same planets, the same instant and the same astronomy. A Western chart and a Vedic chart of the same birth agree on where every body is to within a fraction of an arcsecond.
Then they disagree about almost everything else. Here is exactly where the split happens, and — since this is the question people actually arrive with — what it does to your own sign.

One difference is arithmetic. The rest is machinery
The calculation difference is a single subtraction. Western astrology measures from the vernal equinox; Vedic astrology measures from a fixed point among the stars; the two anchors have drifted about 24° apart. That gap is the ayanamsa, and it is the entire computational disagreement.
Everything else that differs is interpretive apparatus built on top — and those differences are much larger than the 24°.
Western
- Tropical zodiac, measured from the equinox

- Aspects by degree, within an orb the astrologer chooses
- Timing by progressions, solar arc and returns

Vedic

- Usually whole-sign or equal houses
- Seven classical bodies plus Rahu and Ketu; no outer planets
- Aspects by whole sign, with special aspects for Mars, Jupiter, Saturn
- Timing by dashas, derived from the Moon’s nakshatra
- Leads with the ascendant and the Moon
The houses are a second, independent disagreement
This one gets missed. Even with identical positions, Placidus and whole-sign houses can put the same planet in different houses — Placidus divides by time and produces unequal houses that distort at high latitudes, whole-sign simply equates one sign to one house.
So two charts can disagree twice over: once because of the 24°, and again because of how the sky was divided. Someone comparing a Western reading with a Vedic one is usually looking at both effects at once and attributing all of it to the zodiac.
Timing is where they stop being comparable
Progressions advance the chart at a rate — a day for a year — so the chartunfolds. Dashas run a fixed sequence of nine planetary periods totalling 120 years, set at birth by the Moon’s nakshatra and unchanging thereafter.

So which is better?
Neither has demonstrated predictive accuracy under controlled conditions, so “more accurate” is not a claim either can support, and anyone offering you one is reporting an impression.
What can be compared is how checkable each one is. Vedic makes dated claims — a dasha period has boundaries you can compute and disagree with. Western astrology largely moved into psychological description during the twentieth century, which is harder to be wrong about and correspondingly harder to verify.
There is also an argument that cuts against both. Two systems, same planets, 24° apart, placing four people in five in different signs — and both report satisfied readers. If sign placement carried the weight either tradition claims, one of them would be visibly wrong most of the time. That neither is should make you cautious about how much work the sign is really doing in any reading.
If you are coming from Western astrology
Expect your Sun sign to move back one, expect the ascendant and Moon to matter more than you are used to, and expect a reading to talk about periods with dates rather than about phases of growth.
