Sidereal birth chart report: what it is and where to get one
Free calculators will draw you a sidereal chart. Almost nobody will write you a report on one. What a sidereal report should contain, what to check before you trust it, and why the ayanamsa is the number that decides everything.
On this page
The short answer: a sidereal birth chart report is a written reading of a chart calculated against the actual positions of the constellations rather than the seasons. Plenty of sites will drawyou one for free. Very few will write you a report on it — and the ones that do rarely tell you which correction they applied, which is the number the whole chart depends on.
What makes a chart sidereal
Both zodiacs divide the sky into twelve equal slices. They disagree about where to start counting. The tropical zodiac starts at the March equinox; the sidereal one starts from a fixed point among the stars. Because the Earth’s axis wobbles — the precession of the equinoxes — those two starting points have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees, which is most of a sign.
That gap is called the ayanamsa, and it is the single most consequential setting in the calculation. Change it and planets move between signs and houses. If a report does not say which ayanamsa produced it, you cannot tell whether the chart you are reading is yours. The longer explanation is here.
What a sidereal report should actually contain
A drawn chart is not a reading. A report worth paying for should carry all of this, and you can check each item before you buy:
- The ayanamsa, named and to the arc-second — Lahiri, Krishnamurti, Raman and others differ by enough to matter.
- The positions themselves, in degrees, not only as sign placements.
- The houses, with the system named — whole-sign and Placidus produce different charts from the same birth data.
- The period sequence with real dates — sidereal practice runs on dasha timing, and “mid-2027” means the calculation was rounded or never done.
- Divisional charts, if the report claims any depth at all.
- An explicit statement of what it will not claim.
A free sidereal calculator
- A chart wheel, instantly, at no cost
- Sign and house placements
- Often a dasha list of some kind
- Enough to learn on, and genuinely useful
What it leaves out
- Which ayanamsa produced it — usually unstated
- The reasoning behind any interpretation
- Period boundaries computed to a date rather than a year
- Anything you can keep, re-read and check later
Why your signs change when you switch
If you have read tropical astrology for years, a sidereal chart will move most of your placements back by about one sign. This is the moment most people stop, because it feels like being told the last decade was wrong.
It is not a correction. It is a different reference frame.Tropical astrology measures the seasons; sidereal measures the stars. Both are internally consistent, and each has a tradition of interpretation built on top of it — which is why swapping frames but keeping tropical meanings produces nonsense in either direction. That question has its own page, because it deserves more than a paragraph.
What to ask before you pay anyone
- Which ayanamsa did you use? If the answer is vague, nothing else on the page is checkable.
- Can I see a complete sample? Sample pages are marketing; a complete file is evidence.
- Are period dates computed to the day?
- Does the report sell me something inside itself? A reading that ends in a gemstone recommendation has a conflict of interest written into its conclusions.
- What happens to my birth data afterwards?
A test you can run in two minutes: put your details into two different free sidereal calculators. If the charts disagree — and they often do — neither site will tell you which one is right, because neither states its settings. Here is why that happens.
Where the file fits
Everything here is computed sidereally with the Swiss Ephemeris, the ayanamsa is printed on the file to the arc-second, and thecalculation rules are published so the numbers can be reproduced or found wrong. Complete sample files are readable before you buy one — not extracts, the whole document — and theorder page lists what each covers.
