What each planet actually means — and what got added later
The classical texts give each graha a one-word essence. Almost everything that offends a modern reader is a later addition that does not follow from it — and the test separates them cleanly.
Almost every birth chart reading you can buy will tell you what your planets “mean”, and the meanings will run to hundreds of words per planet. Very little of that is in the source texts. What is in the source texts is much shorter, and much more useful — because it gives you a test.
Two verses, seven words
The Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, the text most Vedic astrology is built from, assigns each graha a single essence at chapter 3, verses 12–13. Not a paragraph. A word.
| Graha | Root | Meaning | What genuinely follows from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | ātma | soul, self | identity, vitality, self-authorship, being seen, father, sovereignty |
| Moon | manas | mind | mood, receptivity, memory, nourishment, mother, the public, cycle, sleep |
| Mars | bala | strength | courage, initiative, conflict, injury, deliberate force, siblings, land, heat |
| Mercury | vāk | speech | articulation, analysis, skill, commerce, nerves, learning, discrimination |
| Jupiter | jñāna-sukha | knowledge and happiness | meaning, counsel, teaching, expansion, dharma, children, faith, generosity |
| Venus | śukra | potency, desire | desire, attraction, aesthetics, pleasure, partnership, refinement, comfort |
| Saturn | duḥkha | sorrow, constraint | time, duration, limitation, labour, endurance, consequence, age, structure, service |
The nodes: where the essence verse runs out
That table covers seven. Rahu and Ketu are named in the same chapter and then left out of the governance verse entirely. Every meaning attached to the lunar nodes — and there are many, some frightening and most expensive — has to come from somewhere else. So we went looking for where.
Rahu has a root, but in a different book. Saravali prints its own parallel essence verse:
The Sun is the soul of the Zodiac personified, the Moon mind, Mars strength, Mercury speech (voice), Jupiter intelligence, Venus comforts, Rahu ego and Saturn grief.Saravali 4.1–2
Two things fall out of that. Rahu gets ahaṃkāra, ego — which is why its register above is identity-shaped hunger rather than plain appetite. Andthe two witnesses disagree about two of the seven they share: Jupiter is knowledge and happiness in one and intelligencein the other; Venus is potency in one and comforts in the other. The essence verse is not a single fixed text.
Ketu has no root essence in any essence verse we hold — the only graha of which that is true. Its familiar reading asmoksha-karaka comes from commentators: one states it while reasoning from Jaimini and ends the same page “the readers are requested to investigate further”; another reports it at second hand from “certain Tamil works” — and that witness assigns Rahu to wisdom, contradicting Saravali. The two sources that supply nodal meanings disagree about the node they both cover. We carry moksha-karaka as the best available reading and mark it as commentary, because the alternative is pretending the evidence is firmer than it is.
One root, three registers
A single word per planet sounds thin until you notice it answers three different questions. The same placement has a materialreading, a mental one and a spiritual one — and most disappointment with astrology comes from being handed an answer to the wrong one.
| Graha | Material | Mental | Spiritual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun ātma | Position and authorship — work that carries your name. A weak Sun is rarely an income problem; it is a credit problem. | Self-concept: the felt right to speak as yourself, without borrowing an authority. | The fixed point everything else is measured from. The one graha whose spiritual reading is not a metaphor. |
| Moon manas | Home, food, the public — anything whose value depends on recurring. Rhythm, not accumulation. | The seat of mind. Mood, memory, sleep, and how fast you recover from disturbance. | The receptive mode: devotion, surrender. The Moon does not generate its own light. |
| Mars bala | Land, tools, competition, physical labour. What is won rather than given. | Courage and temper. The question is never whether there is anger, but whether it can be aimed. | Tapas — chosen difficulty, continued anyway. |
| Mercury vāk | Commerce, contracts, skills. Money that arrives because you explained something well. | Analysis and articulation. Speech is thought made checkable. | Viveka — discernment. Telling a real teaching from a plausible one. |
| Jupiter jñāna-sukha | Wealth through counsel, teaching, advisory position — and children. Arrives as an opportunity opened by a person. | Meaning-making: the faculty that decides what a situation is for. | Dharma. Note the verse pairs knowledge WITH happiness — knowing rightly is meant to feel like relief. |
| Venus śukra | Vehicles, comfort, art, and partnership as an economic arrangement. | Desire and taste — the faculty that prefers. Weak Venus is difficulty being pleased by what is available. | The path through desire rather than against it. What you love reveals what you are made of. |
| Saturn duḥkha | Labour, duration, debt, old assets. The one register where slowness is the mechanism, not the obstacle. | Endurance, fear, and honest limits. Saturn does not cause misfortune; it removes the anaesthetic. | Vairāgya — dispassion earned rather than performed. All three registers converge here. |
| Rahu ahaṃkāra | Foreign, unconventional, technological gain. Amplification without limit. | The ego-function: what you need to be seen as. Identity-shaped appetite, not plain appetite. | Spiritual ambition, and practice used as status — but also the force that makes a person want to be more than they are. |
| Ketu — (see below) | Loss and release. Things ending without a transaction: nothing is exchanged, something stops. | Detachment and absorbed specialisation. Depth bought with breadth. | Liberation and the residue of past practice — the one cell here resting on commentary, not a root verse. |
These three columns are ours, and that is stated rather than hidden. No classical text prints them. Each one is derived from the root word, and any reading that cannot be traced back to the root is the fluff this method exists to remove — a test we apply to our own writing before applying it to anyone else's.
Two consequences worth having. A “weak” planet is only weak in a register — a weak Sun is rarely an income problem, it is acredit problem, where the work happens and someone else is thanked. And Saturn is where all three converge: labour, endurance and dispassion are one fact at three depths, which is why Saturn advice is the hardest to fake.
The test this gives you
Once each graha has a root, you can ask of any claim: does this follow from the essence, or was it appended? Saturn isduḥkha — constraint, duration, consequence. Delay follows. Labour follows. Ageing follows. Structure follows.
“Saturn rules the Sudras” does not follow. It is in the same chapter, eight verses later, and it derives from nothing in the essence.
Follows from the essence
- Saturn: delay, endurance, consequence, the long arc of a career
- Moon: mood, memory, receptivity, what nourishes you
- Mars: courage, initiative, injury, deliberate force
- Jupiter: counsel, meaning, teaching, generosity
- Venus: desire, aesthetics, partnership, refinement
Appended — and not carried here
- “Saturn rules the Sudras” (BPHS 3.21)
- “Jupiter and Venus are Brahmins” (BPHS 3.21)
- “Rahu rules the outcaste”, Ketu governs “mixed caste”
- A woman’s rajayogas transferring to her husband
- Mangal dosha as a gate on who may marry whom
Why the fluff filter matters when you are paying for a reading
A reading that lists everything is a reading that commits to nothing. If Jupiter means knowledge, counsel, children, fortune, law, priests, fat, yellow, Thursday, the north-east and the liver, then Jupiter means whatever the reader needs it to mean after the fact — and you cannot tell a good reading from a bad one.
Working from the root does the opposite. Jñāna-sukha in the tenth house is a claim about how you get paid for what you know. It can be wrong. That is the point.
We deleted the appended layer rather than softening it.Every graha page in the reference library lists what we carry, what we do not, and the verse each came from — including the ones we removed. A practice that hides its deletions is asking you to trust it; one that prints them is letting you check it.
What this looks like in a paid file
Our birth chart files are built on the root meanings. Positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the essence table above governs what a placement is allowed to claim, and the file states what it will not answer — no health diagnosis, no death timing, no readings of other people who did not ask.
