Lal Kitab (Red Book of Astrology, with remedies)

Lal Kitab (Red Book of Astrology, with remedies) — what it is, what it added, and what we retired from it.

Lal Kitab (Red Book of Astrology, with remedies) — Pt. Roop Chand Joshi, translated by Pt. Beni Madhav Goswami and Pt. Laxmi Kant Vashisth.

Edition consulted: English translation based on the Lal Kitab edition of 1952.

What kind of text this is

Original written in URDU, in five parts 1939-1952. Derivative versions flooded the market after 1983 and, per the translators, none states which of the five editions it follows.

What it contributed

market-manufactured-1983novel. A 1983 magazine feature turned an unread 1939-52 Urdu work into a mass remedy market.

The corpus’s clearest datable case of manufactured antiquity - and the derivatives cite no edition at all.

origin-myths-denounced-internallynovel. The English edition’s own translators reject three origin myths and give a mundane documented history.

Internal debunking is far harder to dismiss than external critique.

What we do not carry from it

  • preface — Manufactured provenance for a documented 1939-1952 work. Denounced by the text’s own translators. Includes their own hill-tradition Holy-Saints claim, which is equally unevidenced.

Reading the text yourself

We quote and cite; we do not republish. Most translations in this corpus are in copyright, and the public-domain ones are better served by the Internet Archive than by a copy here. Citations give chapter and verse so any claim can be checked against your own edition.
