Nothing is wrong and you still feel empty
Not sadness, which has a subject. The flatness that sits over a life that works — where a chart looks for it, and when it is a medical question instead.

It is not sadness, which is what makes it hard to explain to anyone. Sadness has a subject. This does not. Things are fine on paper, nothing is wrong that you could name in a sentence, and there is simply nothing coming back from any of it.
One thing before anything else, and it is not a disclaimer. Emptiness that does not lift, or that arrives with changes in sleep or appetite, or that comes with the sense that things would be easier if you were not here, is a medical question and not a chart one. That is not us declining to help — it is the difference between a description and a treatment, and a chart cannot do the second. If that is where you are, a doctor or a crisis line is the right call and this page is not.
What follows is about the other kind: the flatness that sits over a life that is working.
The shape of it
People describe it in remarkably similar terms. The things that should register do not. Achievements arrive and feel procedural. You can still do everything — the doing just does not return anything. And because there is no crisis attached, there is nothing to point at and no obvious permission to complain.
It is often mistaken for ingratitude, including by the person having it, which adds a layer of guilt to something that was already flat.
Where a chart looks for it
The method first, since the rest depends on it: a computed Vedic birth chart, positions from the Swiss Ephemeris, a stated ayanamsa printed to the arcsecond in the file. Not a quiz, and not a diagnosis.
Two places carry this, and they describe different versions of it.
Ketu, and the house it sits in. Read classically as the residue — the area where you already have mastery, and therefore the area that returns nothing for what you put in. It is not that you are bad at it. It is that you have done it, at length, and the satisfaction has been used up. When the life you built runs mostly through Ketu's house, everything works and nothing lands. That is the most common structural version of this feeling, and it explains the specific quality of it better than any other single factor.
The Moon and the period sitting on it. The Moon is the significator of the mind — not mood in a shallow sense, but the faculty that registers experience at all. Its condition, and a period lord pressing on it, describes a stretch where the registering itself is dulled. This version has dates on it.
Why the distinction is the useful part
If it is Ketu's house, the answer is not to try harder at the thing that is flat. It is to notice that you are seeking return from the one place structurally unable to give it, and to look at the opposite point — Rahu's house — which is the area you are drawn to and have not mastered. That is where return still exists, precisely because you are not yet competent at it. The prescription is uncomfortable and specific: go and be a beginner at something.
If it is a period, the answer includes an end date. That changes what you should do now, which is mostly: do not restructure your entire life inside it. People quit good jobs and end workable relationships in these stretches, attributing the flatness to the circumstances rather than to the period, and then find the flatness came with them.
The test. Was there a time this was not true? If yes, and you can roughly date it, suspect a period. If it has been the quality of your life for as long as you have been building it, suspect the structure.
What to do while you work it out
Stop auditing whether you are allowed to feel this. The guilt about it is a second problem and it is not load-bearing.
Change the input, not the circumstances. Something you are demonstrably bad at, with no outcome attached, is the fastest test of whether the capacity to register has gone or has just been pointed at exhausted ground for too long.
Write it down with dates. This feeling is almost impossible to remember accurately once it lifts, which means you lose the evidence of what changed. A record that stays useful is worth more here than anywhere else.
What a reading will and will not give you
It will not tell you that you are fine, and it will not hand you a purpose. What it does is narrower: name the house that is returning nothing, name the one that still can, date the period if there is one, and say which of your conclusions about your own life are structural and which are just the weather of a particular decade.
That is the Karmic file — the node axis and the pattern it keeps returning you to, the ninth house and what the chart treats as your dharma, the twelfth read for the inward turn, and the periods that press the question with dates. It is here, and a complete sample is readable before you pay.
If the flatness is really about direction rather than return, the question underneath it is the better place to start.
