How much does an astrology reading cost?
Observed prices across the market, from $20 gig-site readings to $400 live consultations, and what actually changes between the bands. What you are paying for at each price, and where the value stops scaling.

The short answer: roughly $20 to $400, and the spread is not mostly about quality. It tracks what you are buying — a gig, a written report, or a person’s live time. Those are three different products that share a name, and the price bands barely overlap.
The observed bands
Prices below were read from public listings and practitioners’ own pages rather than estimated. They move, so treat them as the shape of the market rather than a quote.
- Gig-site readings≈ $20Fast, short, high volume. Usually a template with your placements inserted. Fine for a specific narrow question; rarely traceable to any stated method.
- Written reports$36 – $69A document, delivered in a day or two. This is where marketplace sellers and independent practitioners who write rather than talk both sit. Depth varies enormously inside this band — page count is not the measure.
- Standard live consultation$150 – $200A professional body’s typical rate for an hour with a credentialed astrologer. You are buying attention and dialogue, not paper.
- Premium live consultation$250 – $400Established practitioners with a public body of work. Same hour, higher demand. The chart calculation underneath is identical arithmetic.
What actually changes as the price rises
Not accuracy. The arithmetic is the same at every price point— planetary positions are astronomy, and a $20 seller and a $400 astrologer using the same ayanamsa will produce the same chart. What scales with price is:
- Human attention. The largest single driver. Live time is the expensive ingredient in every market, and astrology is no exception.
- Interpretive judgement — experience in deciding which of several true things about a chart is the one worth saying.
- Dialogue. You can push back on a person. You cannot push back on a PDF.
- Reputation, which is priced like reputation everywhere else.
And what does not scale: the number of pages, the number of techniques listed, and the confidence of the predictions. A 250-page report is not more accurate than a 20-page one; it is longer.
The one question that separates value from volume at any price:does the reading tell you what settings produced the chart? If the ayanamsa is not stated, you cannot check whether the chart being interpreted is even yours — and that is true whether you paid $20 or $400.
Which band should you buy from?
- You want to be heard, or you are in distress — pay for live time. A document is the wrong purchase, at any price.
- You have one narrow question — a short written reading answers it for the price of lunch.
- You want something to keep, check and re-read — the written band, and judge it on whether the method is stated rather than on length.
- You are early and curious — free calculators give you positions at no cost. Spend nothing until you have a question a chart could actually answer.
Why the free option is not the obvious one
Free calculators are genuinely useful, and we point people at them. The catch is that two of them will often hand you two different charts, neither stating which ayanamsa produced it —this happens more than people expect. Free is the right price for positions. It is not a reading.
